Shema



The Shema is to be read when you rise up and at night.  It consists of the three scripture passages.  These passages were written by the prophet Moses and are located in Deuteronomy 6:4-9; 11:13-21  and Numbers 15:37-41.

Deuteronomy 6

ד. ְשַׁמע ִיְשָׂרֵאל ְיהָוֹה ֱא5ֵהינוּ ְיהָוֹה ֶאָחד:

4. Sh’ma Israél Yah•hovah Elo•héy•nu Yah•hovah e•chád. 

4. Hear, O Israel; Yehovah our God is one Yehovah;

ה. ְוָאַהְבָתּ ֵאת ְיהָוֹה ֱא5ֶהי[ ְבָּכל-ְלָבְב[ וְּבָכל-ַנְפְשׁ[ וְּבָכל-ְמ ֹאֶד[:

5. Ve•a•hav•tá et Yah•hovah Elo•hé•cha be•chol-le•vav•chá oo•ve•chol-naf•she•chá oo•ve•chol - me•odé•cha.

5. And you shall love Yehovah your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.

ו. ְוָהיוּ ַהְדָּבִרים ָהֵאֶלּה ֲאֶשׁר ָאֹנִכי ְמַצְוּ[ ַהיּוֹם ַעל-ְלָבֶב[:

6. Ve•ha•yu ha•de•va•rim ha•é•le ashér Ano•chi me•tzav•chá ha•yom al- le•va•vé•cha.

6. And these words, which I command you this day, shall be in your heart;

ז. ְוִשַׁנְּנָתּם ְלָבֶני[ ְוִדַבְּרָתּ ָבּם ְבִּשְׁבְתּ[ ְבֵּביֶת[ וְּבֶלְכְתּ[ ַבֶדֶּרA וְּבָשְׁכְבּ[ וְּבקוֶּמ[:

7. Ve•shi•nan•tám le•va•né•cha ve•di•bar•tá bam be•shiv•te•chá be•vey•té•cha oo•ve•lech•te•chá va•dé•rech oo•ve•shoch•be•chá oo•ve•ku•mé•cha.

7. And you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when

you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and

when you rise up.

ח.וְּקַשְׁרָתּם ְלאוֹת ַעל-ָיֶד[ְוָהיוּ ְלטָֹטֹפת ֵבּין ֵעיֶני[:

8. Ook•shar•tam le•ot al-ya•dé•cha ve•ha•yu le•to•ta•fot beyn ey•né•cha.

8. And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets

between your eyes.

ט. וּ ְכ ַת ְב ָתּם ַעל- ְמֻזזוֹת ֵבּי ֶת[ וּ ִב ְשׁ ָעֶרי[: 

9. Ooch•tav•tam al-me•zu•zot bey•té•cha oo•vish•a•ré•cha.

9. And you shall write them upon the posts of your house, and on your gates.

Deuteronomy 11

יג. ְוָהָיה ִאם-ָשׁ ֹמַע ִתְּשְׁמעוּ ֶאל-ִמְצוַֹתי ֲאֶשׁר ָאֹנִכי ְמַצֶוּה ֶאְתֶכם ַהיּוֹם ְלַאֲהָבה ֶאת-ְיהָוֹה ֱא5ֵהיֶכם וְּלָעְבדוֹ ְבָּכל-ְלַבְבֶכם וְּבָכל-ַנְפ ְשֶׁכם:

13. Ve•ha•ya eem-sha•móa tish•me•oo el-mitz•vo•tái ashér Ano•chi me•tza•vé et•chem ha•yom le•aha•va et-Yah•hovah Elo•hey•chem oo•le•ov•do be•chol- le•vav•chem oo•ve•chol-naf•she•chem.

13. And it shall come to pass, if you shall give heed diligently to my commandments

which I command you this day, to love Yehovah your God, and to serve him with all

your heart and with all your soul,

יד. ְוָנַתִתּי ְמַטר-ַאְרְצֶכם ְבִּעתּוֹ יוֶֹרה וַּמְלקוֹשׁ ְוָאַסְפָתּ ְדָגֶנ[ ְוִתירְשׁ[ ְוִיְצָהֶר[:

14. Ve•na•ta•tí me•tar-ar•tze•chem be•ee•to yo•ré oo•mal•kosh ve•asaf•tá de•ga•né•cha ve•ti•rosh•cha ve•yitz•ha•ré•cha.

14. That I will give you the rain of your land in its due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your grain, and your wine, and your oil.

15. Ve•na•ta•tí é•sev be•sad•cha liv•hem•té•cha ve•a•chal•tá ve•sa•vá•ata.
15. And I will send grass in your fields for your cattle, that you may eat and be full.

טו. ְוָנַתִתּי ֵעֶשׂב ְבָּשְׂד[ ִלְבֶהְמֶתּ[ ְוָאַכְלָתּ ְוָשָׂבְעָתּ:

טז. ִהָשְּׁמרוּ ָלֶכם ֶפּן-ִיְפֶתּה ְלַבְבֶכם ְוַסְרֶתּם ַוֲעַבְדֶתּם ֱא5ִהים ֲאֵחִרים ְוִהְשַׁתֲּחִויֶתם ָלֶהם:

16. Hi•sham•ru la•chém pen-yif•té le•vav•chem ve•sar•tem va•a•vad•tem elo•hím a•che•rim ve•hish•ta•cha•vi•tem la•hem.

16. Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and you turn aside, and

serve other gods, and worship them;

יז. ְוָחָרה ַאף-ְיהָוה ָבֶּכם ְוָעַצר ֶאת-ַהָשַּׁמִים ְולֹא-ִיְהֶיה ָמָטר ְוָהֲאָדָמה לֹא ִתֵתּן ֶאת-ְיבוָּלהּ ַו ֲא ַבְד ֶתּם ְמ ֵהָרה ֵמ ַעל ָה ָאֶרץ ַהטֹּ ָבה ֲא ֶשׁר ְיהָוֹה ֹנ ֵתן ָל ֶכם:

17. Ve•cha•rá af-Yah•hovah ba•chem ve•a•tzar et-ha•sha•má•yim ve•lo-yi•hi•yé ma•tar ve•ha•ada•ma lo ti•ten et-ye•vu•láh va•a•vad•tem me•he•ra me•al ha•á•retz ha•to•va ashér Yah•hovah no•ten la•chém.

17. And then Yehovah's anger be kindled against you, and he closed the skies, that

there should be no rain, and that the land yield not her fruit; and lest you perish

quickly from off the good land which Yehovah gives you.

יח. ְוַשְׂמֶתּם ֶאת-ְדָּבַרי ֵאֶלּה ַעל-ְלַבְבֶכם ְוַעל-ַנְפְשֶׁכם וְּקַשְׁרֶתּם ֹאָתם ְלאוֹת ַעל-ֶיְדֶכם ְוָהיוּ ְלטוָֹטֹפת ֵבּין ֵעיֵניֶכם:

18. Ve•sam•tem et-de•va•rái é•le al-le•vav•chem ve•al-naf•she•chem ook•shar•tem o•tam le•ot al-yed•chem ve•ha•yu le•to•ta•fot beyn ey•ne•chem.

18. Therefore shall you lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.

יט. ְוִלַמְּדֶתּם ֹאָתם ֶאת-ְבֵּניֶכם ְלַדֵבּר ָבּם ְבִּשְׁבְתּ[ ְבֵּביֶת[ וְּבֶלְכְתּ[ ַבֶדֶּרA וְּבָשְׁכְבּ[ וְּבקוֶּמ[:

19. Ve•li•ma•de•tem o•tam et-b’ney•chem le•da•ber bam be•shiv•te•cha be•vey•té•cha oo•ve•lech•te•cha va•dé•rech oo•ve•shoch•be•cha oo•ve•ku•mé•cha.

19. And you shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.

כ. וּ ְכ ַת ְב ָתּם ַעל- ְמזוּזוֹת ֵבּי ֶת[ וּ ִב ְשׁ ָעֶרי[: 

20. Ooch•tav•tam al-me•zu•zot bey•té•cha oo•vish•a•ré•cha.

20. And you shall write them upon the door posts of your house, and upon your gates;

כא. ְל ַמ ַען ִיְרבּוּ ְי ֵמי ֶכם ִוי ֵמי ְבֵני ֶכם ַעל ָה ֲאָד ָמה ֲא ֶשׁר ִנ ְשׁ ַבּע ְיהָוֹה ַל ֲאבֹ ֵתי ֶכם ָל ֵתת ָל ֶהם ִכּי ֵמי ַה ָשּׁ ַמִים ַעל- ָה ָאֶרץ:

21. Le•má•an yir•bu ye•mey•chem viy•méy v’ney•chem al ha•ada•ma ashér nish•ba Yah•hovah la•avo•tey•chem la•tet la•hém ki•méy ha•sha•má•yim al- ha•á•retz.

21. That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which Yehovah swore to your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth.

Numbers 15

לז.ַויֹּאֶמרְיהָוֹה ֶאל-מֶשׁה ֵלּאֹמר:

37. Va•yó•mer Yah•hovah el-Mo•shé le•mor. 

37. And Yehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

לח. ַדֵּבּר ֶאל-ְבֵּני ִיְשָׂרֵאל ְוָאַמְרָתּ ֲאֵלֶהם ְוָעשׂוּ ָלֶהם ִציִצת ַעל-ַכְּנֵפי ִבְגֵדיֶהם ְלדֹרָֹתם ְוָנְתנוּ ַעל- ִציִצת ַה ָכָּנף ְפּ ִתיל ְתֵּכֶלת:

38. Da•ber el-b’néy Israél ve•amar•tá ale•hém ve•a•su la•hém tzi•tzít al-kan•féy vig•dey•hém le•do•ro•tam ve•nat•nu al-tzi•tzít ha•ka•naf pe•til te•ché•let.

38. Speak to the people of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a thread of blue;

לט. ְוָהָיה ָלֶכם ְלִציִצת וְּרִאיֶתם ֹאתוֹ וְּזַכְרֶתּם ֶאת-ָכּל-ִמְצוֹת ְיהָוה ַוֲעִשׂיֶתם ֹאָתם ְולֹא ָתתוּרוּ ַאֲחֵרי ְלַבְבֶכם ְוַאֲחֵרי ֵעיֵניֶכם ֲאֶשׁר-ַאֶתּם זִֹנים ַאֲחֵריֶהם:

39. Ve•ha•ya la•chém le•tzi•tzít oor•ee•tem o•to ooz•char•tem et-kol-mitz•vót Yah•hovah va•asi•tem o•tam ve•lo ta•tú•ru a•cha•réy le•vav•chem ve•a•cha•réy ey•ne•chem ashér-atem zo•nim a•cha•rey•hem.

39. And it shall be to you for a fringe, that you may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of Yehovah,  and do them; and that you seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, which incline you to go astray;

מ. ְלַמַען ִתְּזְכּרוּ ַוֲעִשׂיֶתם ֶאת-ָכּל-ִמְצוָֹתי ִוְהִייֶתם ְקדִשׁים ֵלא5ֵהיֶכם:

40. Le•má•an tiz•ke•ru va•asi•tem et-kol-mitz•vo•tái viy•hi•yi•tem k’do•shim le’Elo•hey•chem.

40. That you may remember, and do all my commandments, and be holy to your God.

מא. ֲאִני ְיהָוֹה ֱא5ֵהיֶכם ֲאֶשׁר הוֵֹצאִתי ֶאְתֶכם ֵמֶאֶרץ ִמְצַרִים ִלְהיוֹת ָלֶכם ֵלא5ִהים ֲאִני ְיהָוֹה ֱא5 ֵהי ֶכם:

41. Ani Yah•hovah Elo•hey•chem ashér ho•tzé•ti et•chem me•é•retz Mitz•rá•yim li•hi•yot la•chém le’Elohím Ani Adonái Elo•hey•chem.

41. I am Yehovah your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God; I am Yehovah your God.
