Parable 38

38. The Parable of the Prodigal Son

Luke 15:11-32

Spoken by Yeshua as he teaches a great multitude who is following him at the end of 27 CE.

Luke 15:11 Then he said, “A certain man had two sons 12 and the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ And he divided to them his living. 13 And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. 14 When he had spent all, there arose a great famine in that land and he began to be in want. 15 So he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16 He would have desired to fill his belly with the husks that the swine ate because “no one gave him anything to eat. 17 When he came to himself, he said, ‘How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven, and against you, 19 I am no more worthy to be called your son. Make me as one of your hired servants.’ 20 He arose, and went to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. 21 The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight, and am no more worthy to be called your son.’ 22 But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. 23 And bring the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: 24 for my son was dead, and is alive again. He was lost, and is now found.’ And they began to be merry.”

25 Now his elder son was in the field, and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come home and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.’ 28 And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore his father came out and entreated him. 29 He answered his father, ‘Lo, these many years do I serve you, neither transgressed I at any time your commandment: and yet you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. 30 But as soon as this your son was come, which had devoured your living with harlots, you have killed for him the fatted calf.’ 31 And he said to him, ‘Son, you have always been with me, and all that I have is yours. 32 It was only right that we should make merry, and be glad for this: your brother was dead, and is alive again. He was lost, and now is found.’”

The journey to be taken goes down a long and winding road.  Remember always that it is the journey and not the destination that our heart yearns for.  For with every step we take another bird is heard on a branch, the wind - like a breeze - blows up spirals of dust from the earth that test us as we move through time.

Is the world your oyster?  Is there a pearl of great wisdom to find inside?  Guard your heart always dear friend, for the enemy wants to get inside!  If you let him in by embracing the world, that world that so many abide, he will take you down the road of destruction, leaving your penniless with nothing but death at your side.

Just as a lost sheep first kicks up his heals, he later realizes his error, now lost he will be devoured as a late night meal.  As the growling over the hill becomes louder in our ears, the blindness this world casts over us, let it not continue for many more years.  Turn away from the city, the hog trough set before men,  listen unto your heart and Take the Journey that leads back to Him.

For when we come out of the darkness and come along our faithful brothers side, we’ll labor in the fields and live forever, Yea - for a very long time.  Let us work for the Father, rejoice and give thanks for the life that was given back unto Him.  Let us share in the inheritance for it all is a blessing from Him.
