The symbol of Levi is the breastplate which holds the twelve different stones on which are engraved the names of the tribes of Israel, joining Manasseh and Ephraim under the name of Joseph. The breastplate was of utmost importance.
In Exodus 28:15 it is called the breastplate of judgement and it was made of expert workmanship. It was foursquare in shape. A span was the length of it and a span the breadth thereof. A span is the distance between the thumb and little finger when spread out. The dictionary gives it as 9 inches.
Exodus 28:17-20 gives us the names of the twelve different gemstones that were set in it, on for each tribe.
Exodus 28:22-23 “You shall make on the breastpiece chains of twisted cordage work in pure gold. You shall make on the breastpiece two rings of gold, and shall put the two rings on the two ends of the breastpiece.”
Exodus 28:29 “Aaron shall carry the names of the sons of Israel in the breastpiece of judgment over his heart when he enters the holy place, for a memorial before the Lord continually.”
Exodus 28:30 You shall put in the breastpiece of judgment the Urim and the Thummim, and they shall be over Aaron’s heart when he goes in before the Lord; and Aaron shall carry the judgment of the sons of Israel over his heart before the Lord continually.
This symbol is one of the most beautiful in Israel because it shows the loving care that the YeHoVaH has for each one of the tribes. Yeshua has us upon His heart at all times. Aaron carried these tribes always over his heart when he came before YeHoVaH. It did not matter if they sinned and did evil, or if they were good and holy, he carried them upon his heart. They were chained in place with rings, fastened to his ephod. He could only remove them when he left the tabernacle.
The true Levite will always carry the ministry which YeHoVaH has given him upon his heart. He will not be able to lay it down day or night. Wheiher the people he works with are easy to get along with, or whether they be full of rebellion and sin, he will constantly be bringing them into the presence of God. He will not be permitted to lay down his burden or to take a vacation from the calll of God which is upon his life. He is very specially dedicated to God and also to the people whom he represents. He must be more like Yeshua than any of the other tribes.
He never wears the breastplate as an ornament. It is a token of judgement. As he stands before God and serves God, the glory of God shines upon that breastplate and it strikes every single one of the gems, revealing the color, clarity, purity and the flaws that are in each one. Neither can anyone hide anything from the eyes of the Levite. Do not try to deceive a Levite, God will show you up to be a fool. The closer the Levite walks with God, the more he will see into the depth of each spiritual tribe he is ministering to.
Not all Levites had the ministry of the high priest, however. There were certain branches of the tribe that had other ministries, and we will go into these later. But the ones who are given the charge of the Tabernacle, the sons of Aaron, are those of a very high and holy calling, and the are the ones I was speaking about. As we look into the other families of the Levites, you ay find your calling and election is one of them.

The word “garnet” comes from the Latin “granatum” (the pomegranate) having to do with the red color of the stone. It is a brittle, hard, glassy, mineral silicate. Though the word “garnet” is not found in any of the translations of the Bible, garnets were a common stone in Bible times. It is very possible that it was a garnet that was used for the 1st stone in Aaron’s breastpiece. The Hebrew word here is odem which simply means “red” and could have been any number of red stones (though most likely not the ruby as they were not in use until 300 BC). The garnet, however, has been found as early as the Bronze Age, in Egyptian jewelry, dating back to 3100 BC. The Greeks used garnets as signet rings with found artifacts dating around 400 BC. Due to their color, garnets , have been closely associated with blood, as have other stones that are red. They also have the distinction throughout history of often being mistaken for rubies.
